Due diligence is an organised risk assessment process that aims to progressively reduce the risk of illegal wood entering the supply chain over time. Members of the TTF are committed to implementing a due diligence process as a condition of membership - either their own or the TTF's off-the shelf due diligence tool, the TTF's Responsible Purchasing Policy .
The RPP or Responsible Purchasing Policy is the TTF’s ready made risk assessment tool to satisfy TTF members’ due diligence commitments:
• It provides a stepwise approach in progressively sourcing an increasing proportion of timber products from legal and sustainable sources
• It supports members in promoting good practice to customers.
• It prepares members to meet proposed future legislation.
The RPP focuses on uncertified products, making it complementary to certification schemes like the FSC and PEFC. Certified products are screened out at an early stage in the risk assessment process as due diligence has already been carried out on these products. Once the initial screening process has taken place using the Timber Supply Review, then the Supplier Return forms (questionnaires) enable suppliers to give the requested information much more easily than previously.
The Returns are then risk-assessed by members using the TTF’s Country Guidance and the risk ratings are noted on the Summary Report, together with the quantities of timber products in the various risk-rated categories. The Summary Report together with the Timber Supply Review and examples of Supplier Returns which have been risk-rated are then sent to an independent auditor to confirm compliance with the due diligence commitments. A certificate is issued by the TTF and the TTF website updated.
