Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP)

The Timber Trade Federation, in 2010, introduced new environmental criteria in the Code of Conduct to help members prepare for the EU Timber Regulation. This new criteria committed all members to implement an Environmental Due Diligence System from 2010 onwards, the TTF's Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP) or equivalent.

The RPP framework and toolbox is free for all members to use and is a mandatory condition and benefit of membership. Those who do not implement the RPP are removed from membership.  The RPP Process is outlined in the diagram below;

Specifically the RPP:

  • Provides a framework to analyse the risk of illegal timber entering into their supply chains
  • Introduces a phased approach to progressively source increasing proportions of timber products from credible and verified legal and sustainable sources; and
  • Supports members in promoting good practice procurement policies to customers;

The RPP is complementary to certification schemes like the FSC and PEFC. Standard forms and questionnaires enable buyers and suppliers to provide the information required in a formal and systematic way. The TTF provides technical expertise and guidance to support members to implement the RPP.
