Responsible Purchasing Policy

Responsible timber purchasing often needs to go beyond purchasing certified timber or timber from non-controversial countries. Importers, agents and merchants increasingly engage with suppliers and encourage them to improve forest management practises. In a global timber market this is a very difficult and challenging task. The Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP) is a tool that assists TTF members in implementing the Environmental Code of Practice in the TTF Code of Conduct. This states that ‘Members are committed to sourcing their timber and timber products from legal and well-managed forests’ and complements the UK/EU global policy objective of stopping illegal logging.

The RPP has been designed to help members objectively assess the risk of illegal and unsustainable wood products entering their supply chains. The RPP enables members to include environmental criteria within their existing wood product supply chain systems. This process requires constant improvement by members towards sustainably sourced products. The RPP is complementary to internationally recognised environmental certification systems for wood products such as FSC and PEFC.
