TTF Advises Members on PNG and Solomons
Wednesday 28th June 2006
The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) today told its members that sourcing wood products made from timber from Papua New Guinea (PNG) or the Solomon Islands was 'high risk'.
The move comes after Greenpeace last year alleged that PNG sourced bintangor face veneers on Chinese plywood were illegal. Extensive investigation by the Federation into the allegations led to this week's declaration.
The statement says that in the absence of credible evidence of legality, products made from wood from these countries had to be considered high risk and therefore it was advising its members to avoid both PNG and the Solomons.
TTF Chief Executive said:
'We encourage engagement with any supplier who demonstrates credible environmental good practice no matter from which country they operate. However the current situation in PNG and the Solomon Islands means there is very little or no material meeting the environmental standards the UK market requires. We therefore believe it best to advise our members accordingly.'
